Day of the Dead Celebrations in Playa del Carmen

Although Playa observes the national Mexican holidays, such as Cinco de Mayo and Independence Day (16 September), the town has been slowly adding elaborate festivals and celebrations. The largest is probably Navy Day, which takes place 1 June. It’s marked by civic ceremonies, a fishing tournament and other competitions. Another holiday is Carnival, a Fat Tuesday celebration with parades, live music, dancing and food stalls.

Other notable events include the Jazz Music Festival, organized by the Riviera Maya Tourist Board held in November. There's also the Tequila Expo, usually held in August, the Underground Film Festival in October and Day of the Dead at Xcaret starting 30 October. In early January, the BPM Festival is a 10-day festival showcasing international DJs and performing artists. In February, the PGA Mayakoba Golf Classic comes to the Mayan Riviera. Also, there is an Iron Man in both Cancun and Cozumel.

Taste of Playa Culinary Festival (November)

Taste of Playa is a culinary event in Playa del Carmen that celebrates the creativity and cultural influences of chefs throughout the Riviera Maya. The event promotes the unique culinary perspectives of local chefs, highlights new event venues that attract a variety of participants and coordinates the efforts of local businesses and municipal governments. Taste of Playa has captured the attention of international media by showing the spirit of multi-cultural cooperation that defines the modern Riviera Maya.

Riviera Maya Underground Film Festival (October)

Held in October, experimental, animation, fiction, and documentary make up the categories of national and international shorts at the yearly Riviera Maya Underground Film Festival. Screenings take place in various venues in Playa del Carmen, including the Plaza Pelicanos' Hollywood Cinemas.

There are also cinematographic workshops and conferences throughout the festival.

Day of the Dead Celebrations - Xcaret (Late October/Early November)

The annual "Festival of Life and Death Traditions" comes to Xcaret every year to celebrate the Mexican holiday of the Day of the Dead with nearly 100 Mayan communities, plus artists, dancers, musicians, story-tellers, singers. Riviera Maya Jazz Festival (November)

Voted it as one of the ten best jazz events of the year, the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival brings together jazz greats who number numerous Grammy awards among them and who have played with legends of the genre as well as pop and Latin stars that have topped the charts for decades.

BPM Festival (January)

Sacred Mayan Journey(May) / Travesia Sagrada Maya (Mayo)

A reenactment of the ancient ritual sea journey to Cozumel.
